Nothing like getting an EOB from your insurance company in the all-too-recent wake of your third miscarriage that reads a little something like this:
Date of Service: 3/25/2011 (click here for a recap)
Type of Service: Anesthesia and Outpatient Physician
Total Charges: $1,449
Plan Allowance: $0 (that's right - nothing, zero, zilch, nada, big fat goose egg)
You Owe Provider: $1,449
What on earth could be the basis of the denial, you ask?
"Benefits are not provided for services, drugs, or supplies that are not medically necessary or related to ABORTIONS. You are responsible for these charges even if the services, drugs, or supplies were ordered by a provider."
Yep, that's right people, my miscarriage has been equated to an elective termination of my pregnancy. I know that this is probably just a coding error on someone's part, but we really don't need to be dealing with this absolutely insensitive mistake right now. Thanks for rubbing salt in the wounds.
OH MY FREAKING GOD!!!!!!!!! That has to be a joke. I am so sorry you got that. If there was ever a reason I was glad I live in Canada that right there just solidifies it. I really REALLY hope that get's rectified for you right away! Stay strong!
ReplyDeleteNot to get all political, but this is exactly what is wrong with the right wing people who want to cut funding for "abortion". It is not just an optional thing! When people protest and vote against it, they are voting against all of us who are suffering from infertility because they are ignorant! So many women have "abortions" not by choice! Ugh. Makes me angry. Sorry you had to go through that :(
ReplyDeleteI've been right there - paying for an unwanted "abortion", and at the hospital most of the nurses would give you that LOOK, obviously they had not read my chart and did not care to - tore my heart out. But the thing that really got me was the one nurse (a guy no less!) who DID notice this was non-elective and he just said "I'm so sorry" and sqeezed my hand. Still makes me tear up.
ReplyDeleteThinking of you in this awful time.
Insurance companies suck.
ReplyDeleteThat is terrible!! I am so sorry!! Definitely the last thing you want to be dealing with right now.
ReplyDeleteOh how terrible!! I'm so sorry.
